UAE Tour stage 4: Jonathan Milan catches break inside final 500m, shares podium with brother Matteo

A five-man breakaway held 10 seconds with 1.5 km to go in Fujairah, but Lidl-Trek's sprint machine timed his surge perfectly. The result was a family affair, with younger brother Matteo taking third for his first WorldTour podium.

Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) won UAE Tour Stage 4 in a bunch sprint after the peloton caught a five-man breakaway inside the final 500m of the 182 km run from Dubai to Fujairah. The Italian launched off Ben Swift's wheel to win comfortably from Ethan Vernon (NSN Cycling Team), with younger brother Matteo Milan (Groupama-FDJ United) completing the podium for his first WorldTour top-three finish.

Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) retained the red jersey with no changes at the top of GC. Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) sits 21s back, while Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) remains 11th at +1:44 after his Stage 3 losses on Jebel Mobrah.

The breakaway

The day's breakaway formed after 20 km of aggressive racing: Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost), Stefan De Bod (Modern Adventure Pro Cycling), Lorenzo Milesi (Movistar), Patrick Gamper (Jayco AlUla) and James Knox (Picnic PostNL). Gamper swept both intermediate sprints, ensuring no bonus seconds were available for GC riders.

The quintet held roughly two minutes for much of the afternoon. Knox dropped first, but the remaining four held on against a persistent headwind on the wide, straight run-in to Fujairah. With 10 km remaining, the gap was still 25s. At 1.5 km to go, the leaders clung to a 10s advantage. De Bod attempted a late solo acceleration inside the final kilometre, but the sprint trains swallowed the remnants just before the 500m mark.

A crash at -30 km disrupted the chase, bringing down Fabio Jakobsen (Picnic PostNL), Ethan Hayter (Soudal-QuickStep), Daan Hoole (Lidl-Trek) and Robbe Ghys (Decathlon CMA CGM). Most remounted; Ghys abandoned with a suspected collarbone injury.

"I still feel some pain in my hand but I’m fine after the crash on stage 1," Milan said after the race finish. "It feels great to win today and even more with my younger brother also in the top 3."

On sharing a WorldTour podium with Matteo, Milan added: "This is his first WorldTour race, let’s don’t put pressure on him please! I’m really proud of what he did today, he’ll have many years to have fun and to enjoy cycling."

Milan crashed on the opening day. Tim Merlier is not racing. Jebel Hafeet on Stage 6 is the last remaining GC battleground. Tiberi holds a 21s advantage over Del Toro ahead of the 10 km climb.
