The team began in 2011 as Leopard Trek, a Luxembourg project set up by Brian Nygaard and Kim Andersen around Andy and Fränk Schleck. Several riders followed the brothers over from Saxo Bank, among them Fabian Cancellara, Jens Voigt and Stuart O'Grady. It went straight into the top division and put both Schlecks on the podium of the 2011 Tour de France, Andy second and Fränk third.

That first season was also marked by the death of Wouter Weylandt, who crashed on a descent during stage three of the 2011 Giro d'Italia. The remaining riders completed the following day's stage together and then withdrew from the race.

The name has changed repeatedly since. RadioShack's sponsors joined the Luxembourg operation for 2012, making it RadioShack-Nissan under Johan Bruyneel, who stood down that October after the USADA reasoned decision on Lance Armstrong. It raced as RadioShack-Leopard in 2013, the year Chris Horner won the Vuelta a España at forty-one to become the oldest Grand Tour winner. Trek took over the licence for 2014, added Segafredo as co-title sponsor in 2016 and Lidl from 30 June 2023.

Cancellara won the Tour of Flanders in 2013 and 2014 and Paris-Roubaix in 2013 in the team's colours, then took the Olympic time trial in Rio in 2016 before retiring. Bauke Mollema won Il Lombardia in 2019 and Jasper Stuyven took Milan-San Remo in 2021.

Mads Pedersen joined for 2017 and won the world road race title at Harrogate in 2019, the first Danish rider to do so. He has led the cobbled classics campaigns since, and won four stages and the points classification at the 2025 Giro d'Italia. Jonathan Milan joined for 2024 and won the points classification at the 2025 Tour de France.

The Lidl deal covered the women's team that Trek runs under the same management, and both squads rebranded at the same time. In October 2025 Lidl became the majority owner, and the licence was moved to Germany for the 2026 season.
