Jonathan Vaughters founded the squad in Denver in 2003 as a junior development team, racing as 5280-Subaru and then as TIAA-CREF from 2004. It stepped up to Professional Continental level as Slipstream-Chipotle for 2007 and reached the sport's top tier in 2009, by which point Garmin had taken the title sponsorship.

Garmin held it from 2009, the name shifting through Garmin-Slipstream, Garmin-Transitions, Garmin-Cervélo, Garmin-Barracuda and Garmin-Sharp before the deal ended after 2014. Cannondale took over for 2015, first alongside Garmin and then with Drapac from 2016, with Slipstream Sports remaining the owner throughout.

In August 2017, during the Vuelta a España, Vaughters announced that a backer had withdrawn and that the team's future was in doubt. A #SaveArgyle crowdfunding campaign raised over half a million dollars from around 4,700 donors, short of what a WorldTeam licence needed, before EF Education First bought a controlling stake in Slipstream Sports that September. The team raced as EF Education First from 2018, EF Education-Nippo in 2021, and EF Education-EasyPost from 2022.

Johan Vansummeren won Paris-Roubaix in 2011 and Dan Martin took Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2013 and Il Lombardia in 2014. Ryder Hesjedal won the 2012 Giro d'Italia by sixteen seconds from Joaquim Rodríguez, the first Canadian to win a Grand Tour. Alberto Bettiol's 2019 Tour of Flanders was his first professional victory. Rigoberto Urán was second at the 2017 Tour de France and Hugh Carthy third at the 2020 Vuelta a España.

Slipstream was set up with an internal blood-testing programme at a point when American cycling had little credibility left, and the argyle motif that gave the 2017 rescue campaign its name dates from those early years. From 2019 the team ran an alternative calendar alongside the WorldTour, entering Lachlan Morton in gravel and endurance events such as Dirty Kanza and the Leadville 100. EF Education announced a separate women's squad in June 2023, which began racing in 2024.
