Movistar Team

Movistar Team has raced continuously since 1980, when it started out as Reynolds under directeur sportif José Miguel Echávarri. The aluminium sponsor gave way to the bank Banesto in 1990 and to iBanesto.com in 2001. The Balearic Islands tourist board took over as Illes Balears in 2004, Caisse d'Epargne came on board in 2005, and Telefónica put its mobile brand on the jersey in 2011. The squad has been Spanish-registered throughout.

Reynolds won its first Tour de France in 1988 with Pedro Delgado, who added the Vuelta a España the following year. Miguel Indurain then took the Tour every year from 1991 to 1995, the first rider to win five in a row, and the Giro d'Italia in 1992 and 1993. He added the world time trial title in 1995 and Olympic time trial gold in 1996. Abraham Olano won the 1998 Vuelta in Banesto colours.

Under the Movistar name the squad kept winning Grand Tours. Nairo Quintana won the 2014 Giro and the 2016 Vuelta, and Richard Carapaz took the 2019 Giro. Enric Mas arrived in 2020 and was runner-up at the Vuelta in 2021 and 2022. The team finished top of the UCI WorldTour ranking in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Alejandro Valverde joined in 2005, when the team raced as Illes Balears, and stayed to his retirement at the end of 2022. He won the 2009 Vuelta and the world road race title at Innsbruck in 2018. Eusebio Unzué had been in the management since Reynolds started in 1980 and became the team's manager when Echávarri retired in 2008.

The 2019 season was filmed by a Netflix crew for The Least Expected Day, released in 2020, which followed the shared Tour de France leadership of Quintana, Mikel Landa and Valverde. Telefónica extended its backing to a women's squad, announced in 2017 and racing from 2018, run as a separate team from the same organisation.
