UAE Tour Women: Lorena Wiebes completes hat-trick in Abu Dhabi after 'chaos' sprint

The SD Worx-Protime sprinter survived the loss of pilot Barbara Guarischi in the final 2km to hold off Lara Gillespie by less than a bike length, her ninth career stage win at the race.

3 min read

Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) claimed a third consecutive stage win at the 2026 UAE Tour Women in Abu Dhabi, beating Lara Gillespie (UAE Team ADQ) into second by less than a bike length – her tightest margin so far

The 121km stage from Abu Dhabi to the Breakwater followed the pattern of the opening two days, but the sprint itself was less controlled. Wiebes described it as a "chaos" after becoming separated from lead-out rider Barbara Guarischi, forcing her to navigate the final kilometres alone.

The victory is Wiebes' ninth stage win at the UAE Tour Women across multiple editions and her 121st professional victory. Gillespie's second place, the closest any rider has come to beating Wiebes this week, was another high finish for the Irish rider in the green jersey.

Breakaway gamble stretches the peloton

A five-rider breakaway featuring riders from Top Girls Fassa Bortolo, Hitec Products-Fluid Control and Vini Fantini-BePink was given limited rope before being neutralised with around 40km remaining. Nina Berton (EF Education-Oatly) then launched a solo attack that built to a maximum gap of around 90 seconds, stretching the sprint teams on the exposed roads into Abu Dhabi.

Berton's move forced SD Worx-Protime and UAE Team ADQ to commit riders to the chase earlier than on the previous stages. The combined effort of the sprint trains brought her back with just under 5km to go.

AG Insurance-Soudal and Cofidis moved to the front at the flamme rouge, with Franziska Koch (FDJ United-Suez) opening her sprint early. But with around 200m remaining, Wiebes launched from an exposed position, riding through the wind before holding off Gillespie on the line

Amalie Dideriksen (Cofidis) took third, with pre-race second favourite to Wiebes, Charlotte Kool (Fenix-Premier Tech), finishing fourth. Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) rounded out the top five.

"I found some gaps but also some wind so it was difficult to sprint to victory today." Wiebes said. "But my team did an amazing job all day long to chase the breakaways down."

Elisa Longo Borghini was active near the front inside the final 2km, protecting her own GC position while supporting Gillespie's sprint run. UAE Team ADQ now shift focus to tomorrow's decisive stage.

With the flat stages complete and the overall standings still tightly grouped, the 10km ascent of Jebel Hafeet, averaging 7.2% with ramps to 11%, is now expected to decide the GC in the 2026 UAE Tour Women.
