UAE Tour Women: Lorena Wiebes 'scared' but victorious in crash-marred stage 2 Dubai sprint

The Dutch champion navigated a fragmented finale to claim her second consecutive stage win, extending her overall lead as rival Charlotte Kool finished only ninth on the chaotic run-in to Mohammed Bin Hamdan Smart University.

Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) won stage 2 of the UAE Tour Women on Friday, holding off Chiara Consonni (Canyon//SRAM) and Nienke Veenhoven (Visma-Lease a Bike) after a crash at just outside the final kilometre disrupted the sprint trains.

The victory, her eighth career stage win at this race, extends her overall lead with time bonuses while GC contenders Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE Team ADQ) and Anna van der Breggen (SD Worx-Protime) finished safely in the bunch.

The 145km stage through Dubai began with a four-rider break that built a seven-minute advantage before SD Worx-Protime, UAE Team ADQ and Fenix-Premier Tech organised the chase. The catch came with 29km remaining, but a drop in pace over the following 20km left a large peloton entering the technical finale.

The congestion affected positioning in the run-in to the finish. As the race funnelled from wide boulevards onto the narrower roads approaching Mohammed Bin Hamdan Smart University, teams scrambled for position into the corners at 1.2km and 600m to go. A crash before the penultimate turn scattered several lead-outs, and Franziska Koch (FDJ United-Suez) launched a late acceleration that forced an early chase.

Wiebes and lead-out rider Barbara Guarischi lost contact multiple times in the final kilometres but reunited before the final bend. Wiebes launched early and held off Consonni's surge, while Charlotte Kool (Fenix-Premier Tech) finished ninth after the disruption.

"Today I was actually scared in the final," Wiebes said in a post-finish interview. "We went so slow in the last 20km, everybody was full gas in the last five kilometres. I keep on trusting Barbara, and that was the most important thing."

Stage 3 takes place in Abu Dhabi, where Wiebes will have the chance to take a third sprint win.
