Tour top 10 reshuffled on Alpe d'Huez with Carapaz and Martinez biggest winners in Tour snake and ladders

Lenny Martinez and Richard Carapaz each gained two places, while Juan Ayuso fell to seventh and the fight behind Remco Evenepoel remained tightly balanced.

Lenny Martinez and Richard Carapaz each climbed two places in the Tour de France top 10 on Friday as the first Alpe d’Huez test produced another substantial general classification reshuffle.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) won and extended his overall lead, while Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) could not follow the race leader up the climb. Evenepoel still strengthened his hold on second place, gaining 12 seconds on Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and 16 seconds on both Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGM) and Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek).

That leaves Evenepoel 2:31 ahead of third-placed Del Toro with two stages remaining. The Mexican appeared to have made a stronger gain on the riders immediately behind him, but a rapid finish from Seixas and Skjelmose limited the damage.

Del Toro, in the end, only took four seconds from them, keeping the contest for the final podium place tight. Seixas remains fourth, with Martinez now fifth and Skjelmose sixth.

The narrow margins followed the time trial that tightened the podium contest, when Seixas had already moved closer to Del Toro after Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) abandoned.

Martinez and Carapaz climb as Ayuso drops

Martinez was the day’s biggest winner, climbing from seventh to fifth overall after a superb ride from the breakaway. There was an irony to the result: Lidl-Trek had helped establish the move to support Mads Pedersen’s pursuit of the intermediate sprint, but Martinez ultimately used it to leapfrog both of the team’s riders in the top 10.

Juan Ayuso was the second rider from the top 10 to be distanced and the Spaniard suffered all the way to the line. After the finish he was unable to ride on and leant up against the barriers absolutely empty with teammate Quinn Simmons helping him back onto his bike and away from the finish line.

Ayuso swapped with Martinez and fell to seventh in the GC, the most places lost by any rider starting the day in the top 10 of the general classification.

Carapaz also jumped up two places from tenth to eighth thanks to his superb breakaway efforts for the umpteenth time in this Tour. He overtook Tom Pidcock (Pinarello-Q36.5) and Jordan Jegat (TotalEnergies) who both dropped one place. Carapaz is now 21:15 behind Pogačar. Jegat still holds a 6:30 buffer over 11th-placed Yannis Voisard (Tudor).

The revised order behind Pogačar is Evenepoel, Del Toro, Seixas, Martinez, Skjelmose, Ayuso, Carapaz, Pidcock and Jegat. Four riders changed position by two places, while Pidcock and Jegat each moved down one.

"We did our best with the team,” Del Toro told the Tour de France website. “It’s incredible how the guys are still able to manage the situation. Thanks to everybody it was pretty much a good day for everybody and I’m super happy to see Tadej (Pogačar) shining.

“It was an incredible first experience [at Alpe d’Huez]. It will be a great battle still tomorrow. There are two days left in the Tour, so we’ll see how it ends. Tomorrow, I expect more or less the same as today. Maybe a bit more chaos… The beginning may be a little bit more tricky but in the end it should be similar."

The Alpe d'Huez finish also reduced the number of riders within an hour of the yellow jersey to 13. Davide Piganzoli (Visma-Lease a Bike) holds the final place inside that margin at 55:57.

Evenepoel's advantage over Del Toro now gives him a firmer hold on second, but only four seconds separated Del Toro from Seixas and Skjelmose on the stage and 24 seconds splitting Del Toro and Seixas in GC. With two stages left, the positions behind Pogačar remain unsettled despite the race leader's continued gains, and near-certain victory in Paris.
