Cycling behind paywalls: Belgian fans need subscriptions for half the cyclocross World Cup

Middelkerke was the second paywalled race of the winter, and ten more follow, including six World Cup rounds. Sporza keeps the highlights. Across the border, NOS is showing those same World Cup races live for free.

Cyclocross is partly going behind a paywall in Belgium for the first time with a paid sports subscription required to watch Thursday’s Superprestige round in Middelkerke live. This is the second of twelve World Cup and Superprestige races this winter that will not be aired live on free television in the sport’s strongest home market.

Middelkerke was streamed live exclusively on Play Sports in Belgium through Telenet and Pickx+ Sports 1 through Proximus. Overijse on October 25 was the first paywalled round. Ten remain, including six World Cup rounds, among them the British round taking place in Glasgow, Scotland, on Sunday, December 13. The World Cup begins on November 27. Sporza is scheduling highlights of all twelve races, but anyone who wants to follow them live has to pay.

The other six World Cup rounds, Tabor, Koksijde, Gavere, Besançon, Zonhoven and Hamme, are live on Sporza, as are the Superprestige rounds in Ruddervoorde and Diegem. Sporza also lists the HG Cross and X²O Badkamers Trofee races live, along with this weekend's European Championships in Zeddam, the Belgian Championships in Bilzen on January 9–10 and the World Championships in Oostende on January 29–31. The open channels Proximus Showcase and Play6 also carry World Cup and Superprestige races outside the twelve paid rounds.

Both providers offer subscriptions at €19.99 a month, but the conditions differ. Telenet's Play Sports is open to any Telenet customer, including those with only a mobile or internet subscription. It runs for a minimum of one month and can then be cancelled monthly. Men's and women's races are both included. "No, cyclocross is part of the 'Play Sports' and 'Play Sports + DAZN Total' subscription," Telenet said when asked whether a separate cyclocross subscription exists. The DAZN bundle costs €34.99 a month.

At Proximus, €19.99 is a promotional price for the first three months, available on purchases until January 31, 2027. The regular price is €24.99. "The Sports offering is an additional TV option reserved for customers of the basic television offering," Proximus said. Its television and internet packs start at €75.99 a month.

How the Netherlands and the UK compare

It is a similar scene over the border in the Netherlands as HBO Max carries the Superprestige, the World Cup and the trophy races. Its €5 Sport add-on sits on top of a base plan, which brings the monthly total to €10.99, €16.99 or €21.99 depending on the tier. However, one major difference is that NOS is also showing all World Cup rounds free on its website NOS.nl, as well as its mobile app and smart-TV app. This also includes the European and World Championships.

UK cyclocross fans have also faced changes to their viewing options. The World Cup and Superprestige were part of Discovery Sports' cyclocross offering through Eurosport and GCN+ before GCN+ closed on December 19, 2023. In February 2025, Eurosport moved into TNT Sports, and the monthly streaming price rose from £6.99 to £30.99. That price stayed the same when TNT Sports moved to HBO Max on March 26, 2026, and a £25.99 option requires a twelve-month term.
