Eighteen hairpins of the D77B stacked into a cliff face above the Maurienne valley — one of cycling's most photographed roads, climbing 3.4 km at 8% from Pontamafrey to the village of Montvernier, where the road continues towards the Col du Chaussy.

The Lacets made a spectacular Tour debut late in the stage: Bardet, clear after attacking near the summit of the Col du Glandon, led over the hairpins and soloed to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne for his first Tour stage win. The Lacets returned in 2018 and 2022.
