Primož Roglič

Roglič was a ski jumper before he was a cyclist. He started on the hill at Zagorje ob Savi at the age of ten and took team gold at the 2007 junior world championships. He also crashed as a test jumper on the flying hill at Planica that year and was airlifted to hospital. He carried on jumping for a few more seasons, then left the sport and turned professional on the road at 23.

He builds his results around the time trial, taking time against the clock and holding it in the mountains, where he tends to attack inside the final kilometre rather than set a pace from distance. He wins reduced sprints out of small groups. He descends hard, and crashes have ended several of his Grand Tours.

His first Grand Tour brought a win, the stage nine time trial at the 2016 Giro d'Italia. He took a Tour de France stage at Serre Chevalier in 2017 and another at Laruns in 2018, finishing fourth overall that July. Tour de Romandie, Itzulia Basque Country and Tirreno-Adriatico followed, and in 2019 he won the Vuelta a España, the first Slovenian to win a Grand Tour.

He went into the penultimate stage of the 2020 Tour, a time trial to La Planche des Belles Filles, 57 seconds up on Tadej Pogačar, and finished the race 59 seconds down. He won the Vuelta again that autumn, along with Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and took the Vuelta once more in 2021 with Olympic time trial gold in Tokyo, Slovenia's first cycling medal at the Games. Crashes ended his 2022 Tour and Vuelta.

The 2023 Giro came down to the mountain time trial to Monte Lussari, where he dropped his chain, took 40 seconds out of Geraint Thomas and rode into the pink jersey with a day left. He had won Tirreno-Adriatico and the Volta a Catalunya earlier that spring, and Paris-Nice and the Critérium du Dauphiné the year before.

In 2024 he won the Dauphiné by eight seconds from Matteo Jorgenson and the Vuelta a España again, and crashed out of both Itzulia and the Tour. He won the Volta a Catalunya with two stages in 2025, wore the leader's jersey early at the Giro before abandoning on stage 16, and finished eighth at the Tour de France.
