A ferociously steep Beaufortain climb from Beaufort — 12 km at nearly 8%, ramping into double digits — used as a brutal variant on the way to the Lac de Roselend and the Cormet. Only introduced to the Tour in 2018.

One of only five HC climbs in the 2021 Tour, the Pré was crested first by Nairo Quintana; O'Connor went clear over the day's climbs and soloed to Tignes to leap up the general classification.

Warren Barguil crested the fearsome Col du Pré first on a decisive Alpine day; up the road Thomas won at La Rosière and pulled on the yellow jersey he would keep to Paris.
