Two Paris-Roubaix cobbled sectors that meet in Wallers, on the run-in to the Arenberg mine where the Tour has finished three times: Haveluy–Wallers, the 2.5 km sector named after Bernard Hinault, ridden in 2010, and the 1.6 km Pont Gibus from Hasnon, taken in 2014 and 2022 — both in the opposite direction to Paris-Roubaix. The Tour has never used the Arenberg trench itself.

Clarke won a four-up sprint from the break on the dusty pavé; Primož Roglič dislocated his shoulder in a crash and popped it back in against a road barrier — his Tour effectively over.

Apocalyptic rain turned the pavé to grease. Boom won in the mud; Chris Froome crashed out of the Tour, while Vincenzo Nibali stunned everyone by gaining two minutes on his climbing rivals — the day he won the 2014 Tour.
