When the Tour visits the north it borrows the brutal cobbled farm roads of Paris-Roubaix around Wallers-Arenberg (though never the infamous trench itself, which is deemed too dangerous). Dust, crashes and chaos guaranteed — GC contenders fear these days more than any mountain.

Won by Simon Clarke (AUS)
Clarke won a four-up sprint from the break on the dusty pavé; Primož Roglič dislocated his shoulder in a crash and popped it back in against a road barrier — his Tour effectively over.

Won by John Degenkolb (GER)
A proper mini Paris-Roubaix ending in the velodrome town. Degenkolb took an emotional win; Richie Porte crashed out and yellow jersey Greg Van Avermaet defended brilliantly.

Won by Lars Boom (NED)
Apocalyptic rain turned the pavé to grease. Boom won in the mud; Chris Froome crashed out of the Tour, while Vincenzo Nibali stunned everyone by gaining two minutes on his climbing rivals — the day he won the 2014 Tour.
