The steep half of the Munster valley's one-two: the Petit Ballon's descent lands at Sondernach and feeds straight into 7.1 km at 8.4%, the hardest sustained stretch in the Vosges. The Tour has never finished up here — the col is a launchpad, and the race has always been going somewhere else by the top.

Won by Tadej Pogačar
The last mountain of the 2023 Tour, and the end of Thibaut Pinot's last one: he led alone over the Petit Ballon through a wall of noise, then was caught and dropped by the favourites on the Platzerwasel. Felix Gall crested first; Pogačar won at Le Markstein ahead of Gall and Vingegaard.

The Petit Ballon and the Platzerwasel back to back, then 21 km of descent to Kruth. Joaquim Rodríguez led over the col; Nibali won at La Planche and took back a yellow jersey he never gave up. Alberto Contador had crashed on the Petit Ballon descent earlier in the day and abandoned with a broken leg.
