Panaracer Dirty Reiver: Britain’s gravel rite of passage

The UK’s flagship gravel sportive returns to Kielder’s vast forest roads for a remote, beautiful and brutally satisfying challenge over 65, 130 or 200 km. Big views, big climbs, bigger smiles.

Kielder’s endless forest roads, moorland skylines and deep sense of remoteness make the Dirty Reiver a bucket‑list ride for UK gravel fans. Marking a decade of dust and legends, the event weekend falls around 24–26 April 2026, based at Kielder Castle Forest Park Centre on the English–Scottish border. Expect thousands of riders, a buzzing expo, and one of the most complete gravel experiences this side of the Atlantic.

Route overview

Three routes cater for different ambitions: 65 km, 130 km and the full 200 km “Reiver”. Surfaces are roughly 95% off‑road, mostly fast hard‑pack with the odd freshly graded or chunky section. Elevation is meaningful across all distances: around 1,000 m (65 km), 2,100–2,400 m (130 km) and roughly 3,100 m for the 200 km. Climbs are rarely alpine-long but accumulate—think sustained 4–7% drags with short pitches nudging into the low teens, and fast, loose descents that reward smooth lines and patience on the brakes.

Notable sections typically include exposed moorland where crosswinds bite, quick runouts near Kielder Water, and late-race rises on the long courses when fatigue takes hold. Routes are released as GPX a couple of weeks out; the start is usually neutralised for a few kilometres before timing begins. Cut-offs keep everyone safe—plan pacing to clear the early one comfortably.

Why it’s special (and hard)

The Dirty Reiver channels the spirit of classic American gravel epics while feeling distinctly Northumbrian: huge skies, dark forests, red squirrels and an International Dark Sky Park backdrop. The difficulty is honest—no single monster climb, but relentless rollers, rougher interludes and spring weather that can swing from benign to bracing. Get your fuelling right and it’s magic; get it wrong and even 130 km feels mighty.

Getting there and staying

Kielder Castle (NE48 1ER) is remote. Driving is simplest, with event-managed parking at HQ—arrive early on race morning. Public transport is limited: trains to Hexham or Carlisle then a pre-booked taxi are the realistic options, though always double check that taxi providers can accomodate bike carriage. Newcastle International Airport is the closest major hub.

Accommodation spans cosy inns, self‑catering cottages and lodge parks around Kielder Water; there’s also a village campsite and motorhome options. Wild camping isn’t permitted—book early as the weekend sells out fast.

On-course support and facilities

Expect professional timing, clear waymarking, medical cover, SAG, and neutral mechanics at HQ/feeds. Feed stations are well stocked (water, electrolytes, gels, fruit, sometimes hot options). As a guide: 65 km typically has 1 feed, 130 km 2, and 200 km 3. Finishers get a hot meal, plus showers and a bike wash back at the village.

Typical completion times vary with weather and fitness: many riders finish the 65 km in 3–5 hours, 130 km in 6–9 hours, and 200 km in 9–13+ hours.

Pacing, gear and preparation

  • Bike/tyres: Gravel bike or hardtail MTB. Go tubeless with fresh sealant; 38–45 mm tyres balance grip and comfort. Bring at least two tubes, levers, pump/CO₂ and a multi‑tool.
  • Gearing: Aim for a sub‑1:1 climbing gear (e.g., 40T x 42T or easier). You’ll appreciate it late on.
  • Clothing: Layer up for 2–13 °C swing; pack a waterproof/windproof. Consider lightweight full‑finger gloves and a gilet. Mobile signal is patchy—carry your own essentials.
  • Nutrition: Start fuelling early. Target 60–80 g carbs per hour, sip little and often (500–750 ml/h, more if windy). Use feeds to top up bottles and pockets.
  • Strategy: Ride the first hour like you’ve 180 km to go—even if you don’t. Keep momentum on the rollers, stay smooth on loose descents, and respect the cut-offs.

Atmosphere

The expo brings top gravel brands, good coffee and hearty food, with a friendly, low‑ego vibe that welcomes first‑timers and seasoned off‑roaders alike. Clear skies? Stick around for world‑class stargazing over Kielder Water. See you in the dust.
