Stability trumps disruption as ASO chooses Caja Rural over Unibet Rose Rockets for Tour de France wildcard

ASO confirms 23-team field for the 113th edition, with the Spanish ProTeam selected for its first Tour appearance. The Barcelona Grand Départ and Olympic champion Iúri Leitão proved decisive factors.

Tour de France organiser ASO has confirmed the 23-team line-up for the 113th edition, awarding wildcard invitations to Caja Rural–Seguros RGA and TotalEnergies.

The selection gives the modern Caja Rural structure its first Tour start. French-registered Unibet Rose Rockets, after establishing a disruptive identity and assembling a roster built around Dylan Groenewegen (Unibet Rose Rockets) and Wout Poels (Unibet Rose Rockets), were not selected.

The 2026 Tour runs from July 4 to July 26, with the Grand Départ in Barcelona. The field comprises 18 mandatory WorldTour teams, three ProTeams that earned automatic invitations based on 2025 rankings, Cofidis, Pinarello-Q36.5 and Tudor Pro Cycling, and the two discretionary wildcards.

ASO director Christian Prudhomme said the selection followed consistent criteria based on the 2025 ProTeam ranking. "Caja Rural was 25th," he explained to news agency AFP, "but with the disappearance of Arkéa–B&B Hotels and the merger of Lotto and Intermarché, it becomes the 23rd."

The Spanish team finished around 700 UCI points ahead of Unibet Rose Rockets in that ranking, and placed fourth in the team classification at the 2025 Vuelta a España. The race starts in Barcelona, and the Caja Rural–Seguros RGA roster includes Iúri Leitão, who won Olympic gold in the Madison and silver in the Omnium at Paris 2024.

"For the entire team, it's an honour and a thrill that's hard to describe to make our debut in the Tour de France," said José Miguel Fernández, the team's sports director. "Getting here is the result of many years of work, perseverance, and growth as a team."

TotalEnergies, led by long-serving manager Jean-René Bernaudeau, received the second wildcard in what ASO considered a logical choice given the team's consistent participation in French races since 2000 – in its first iteration as team Bonjour.

Unibet Rose Rockets were not selected despite the team signing six-time Tour stage winner Groenewegen during the off-season. Prudhomme questioned the team's French identity despite their licence. "They do not emphasise the French identity at all. They have more Dutch riders," he said to AFP.

Team owner Bas Tietema responded in a video on social media: "The Tour de France is and always will be our dream race. So please, keep dreaming with us."

Reports indicate Unibet Rose Rockets remain a candidate for a wildcard invitation to the 2026 Giro d'Italia.
