Won by Marco Pantani (ITA)
In cold, driving rain Pantani attacked far out on the Col du Galibier and soloed over the top and down to Les Deux Alpes, taking nearly nine minutes on a cracking Jan Ullrich. He seized the yellow jersey and went on to win the Tour — completing the Giro–Tour double.
